This preset is the drum breakdown from the middle of the song ’Pyramids on Mars’ by Virgil Donati. It’s from the album Serious Young Insects.

The kick plays every 3rd 16th note.
The right hand plays every 8th note on the hi-hat, accenting the 1/4 note. This results in a 2 v 3 polyrhythm between right hand and right foot. It takes 4 repeats of the 21/16 pattern until the accented hihat pattern resolves with the kick.

The left foot plays 6 against the 7 of the right foot. This is the equivalent of playing every 7th 32nd note.

The left hand plays on the 3rd and 5th of those 6 left foot beats. It lines up with the guitar riff in the song. The guitar riff is in 7/16, and fits 3 times into the 21/16 bar. The snare plays beat 1 of the second and third 7/16 riffs.

It’s a complicated groove, but sounds pretty cool.

I have a lesson that breaks it down at https://www.joecrabtree.com/content/crazy-polyrhythms-2-full-lesson if you want to learn to play it.
